It was in July of 2008 when Allan from
Old Town approached us to bring one of the Saint Cloud Car Cruises
to Old Town to give a little more atmosphere to the Mid Week musical
event "Rock at the Clock" starring Dwight Icenhower.
After a bit of coaxing I managed to get Mustang Mike to agree to
bring the failing Duke Davis Memorial Wednesday Nite Cruise-In and
be the host, he was compensated at the same rate for his duties in
the "Blue Room" but didn't have to bring his rig. Old Town staffed
the event with Tracy and sometimes Allan. Linda & I volunteered to
handle the registration and park the cars. In April of 2009
Mike left the show after Mike Singer came back because he would no
longer be compensated. Linda & I carried on as volunteers. the show
changed it's name to "Little Darlin's Street Party and
Cruise-In" in January 2010. Chuck & Tracy wanted me to add
my name to the Marquee but I chose not to. The Merchants Association
or Old Town, I am not sure who has paid, "The Dukes" for their
appearances, Linda & I remain un compensated and have not missed a
Wednesday since we made the commitment. My newspaper and associated
Websites continue to cover all of the car events with little or no
compensation other than those that purchase it to cover the cost of
ink, and sometimes 1 or 2 advertisements. We do this because we
enjoy this venue that we have called home for so long and want to
help keep it open in these trying economical times. We do not even
pester the merchants for Prizes! They already do so much for the
Friday & Saturday events. Cheryl from Wond'n'Round participates by
providing the Cruiser of the Week Award.
We do what we do because of the
community that has evolved over the years. The World Travelers that
set Vacations to coinside with events at Old Town. We have made many
friends and they rely on us for the "Stories" of this little
shopping center that we call home. I have always had a Donations
button on the bottom of my site but only 3 people over the years
have done that. We have spent a lot of our personal money to keep
this endeavor, for the benefit of Old Town, going and will
until it stops being fun.....
The Old Car part of Wednesday is not
governed directly by Old Town but is done for them and since there
isn't any Old Town Staff on Duty Linda & I Host it for them.
We'll celebrate our 3rd Anniversary in
November 16th, 2011 even though it falls on July 16th so that we can
have some of our regular "Snowbirds" participate.
